The Labour Party has urged Nigerians to draw lessons from Brazil’s recent presidential election by supporting its candidates in the 2027 general elections.
The party said the re-election of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva showed how voters could use their votes to support political movements that prioritise social justice, economic inclusion and public welfare.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ken Asogwa, made the call in a statement on Friday while congratulating Lula on securing another term in office.
Lula won 51.79 per cent of valid votes in Brazil’s October 25 presidential run-off, defeating his right-wing challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, who polled 48.21 per cent.
Asogwa said the Labour Party shared similar ideological values with Brazil’s Workers’ Party, particularly its commitment to social democracy.
He encouraged Nigerians to support Labour Party candidates across elective positions, noting that the Brazilian election demonstrated the influence of voters in determining the political direction of their country.
The party spokesman also cited Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s administration as evidence of the Labour Party’s ability to provide leadership and address citizens’ needs.
He said the party’s approach to governance was centred on improving public welfare, promoting economic opportunities, ensuring social justice and encouraging equitable development.
Asogwa added that Nigeria could benefit from having the party lead at all levels of government, including the presidency.
He expressed confidence in the party’s vision ahead of the 2027 elections, maintaining that Nigerian voters could use the ballot to bring about their desired political changes.
