Vice President Kashim Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Thursday.
Shettima is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the UNGA General Debate.
According to the provisional speakers’ schedule for the afternoon session, Nigeria is listed as the fourth speaker. Proceedings are expected to begin at 3:00 p.m. New York time, or 8:00 p.m. Nigerian time, with Shettima scheduled to address the assembly between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. local time, corresponding to 9:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Nigerian time.
His address is expected to focus on Nigeria’s position on multilateralism, sustainable economic growth, peace and security, as well as reforms to global institutions.
A key issue is expected to be Nigeria’s longstanding call for greater representation of African countries in global decision-making, including its push for a permanent African seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Shettima’s appearance comes as world leaders gather in New York for the annual high-level General Debate of the UN General Assembly.
