The reception party also included the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, and the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, alongside senior diplomatic officials.

Shettima is in the United States to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and lead Nigeria’s high-level delegation at the annual UN gathering.

The UNGA 81 General Debate is scheduled for September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme: “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

During the General Debate, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and outline the country’s positions on key global issues.

His programme also includes participation in high-level sessions on sustainable development, climate action and multilateral reforms, as well as bilateral meetings with world leaders and global stakeholders.

The Vice President is also expected to engage with members of the Nigerian diaspora community in the United States.
