The Federal Government has begun rehabilitation work on the Kano Eastern Bypass in an effort to improve traffic flow and preserve one of the state’s key transport routes.
Officials of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) said the project covers the 13-kilometre stretch linking the Maiduguri Road axis with the Katsina and Kaduna corridors through Kano’s eastern bypass.
Speaking during an inspection of the project in Kano on Saturday, the supervising engineer overseeing the work, Sarfil Umar, said the repairs are being carried out through direct labour, with about 70 agency personnel and additional workers deployed to the site.
He explained that the maintenance is designed to reduce congestion within Kano metropolis while protecting the road from further deterioration during the rainy season. According to him, early intervention will help prevent more extensive damage, lower future rehabilitation costs and improve travel for motorists and commercial transport operators.
Umar noted that the bypass plays a vital role in regional transportation, serving as a major route for trucks moving agricultural produce, livestock, petroleum products and manufactured goods between Kano and neighbouring states.
The maintenance exercise, which began on July 23, is expected to be completed within two weeks.
The project includes filling potholes, clearing blocked drainage channels, removing refuse, and repairing damaged street lighting poles along the dual carriageway.
Umar stressed that keeping drainage systems functional is essential to protecting road infrastructure, as stagnant water weakens the road foundation and accelerates pavement failure.
He also appealed to residents to stop dumping waste into drainage channels, warning that blocked drains increase the risk of flooding and damage public infrastructure.
FERMA’s Kano State Coordinator, Bashir Mohammed Isma, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to routine maintenance of federal roads, saying the current intervention is aimed at keeping the highway in good condition and improving safety for all road users, especially heavy-duty truck operators who frequently use the corridor.
