The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed a viral photograph and audio message claiming that four women disguised as market traders were involved in kidnapping in Port Harcourt, saying the image was generated using artificial intelligence.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe said investigations showed that no such incident was reported at any police division or formation across the state. She added that a preliminary digital assessment identified clear signs that the photograph was AI-generated and should not be treated as credible evidence.
The command said it has begun investigations to identify those responsible for creating and circulating the false content, warning that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
The police urged residents to avoid sharing unverified reports, manipulated content, or AI-generated images capable of causing panic and public disorder. It also advised members of the public to verify information through official channels before disseminating it.
The command reassured residents that Rivers State remains peaceful and secure, reiterating its commitment to intelligence-led policing, crime prevention, and the protection of lives and property.
