Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlie Boy, has admitted to engaging in criminal activities and making several poor decisions during his younger years, saying those experiences are detailed in his forthcoming memoir, 999.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Prime Time, Charlie Boy said he deliberately chose to give an honest account of his life, including the mistakes and controversies that shaped his journey. He revealed that while living in the United States in his mid-twenties, he became involved in white-collar crime before eventually turning his life around.
The entertainer said the memoir recounts both his failures and triumphs, adding that its title symbolises a new beginning rather than the rebellious image many Nigerians have long associated with him.
Charlie Boy also reflected on how age has changed his outlook, noting that he now prioritises peace, healthy living and avoiding unnecessary stress.
He further spoke about surviving prostate cancer, saying the experience motivated him to support other men dealing with similar health challenges and to encourage them to speak openly about their struggles.
Despite the country’s current challenges, Charlie Boy expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying he believes the younger generation holds the key to the nation’s progress. He also reflected on his relationship with his late father, former Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, explaining that his rebellious lifestyle stemmed from a desire to build his own identity rather than live in his father’s shadow.
