The Oyo State Government has suspended all school excursions, inter-school sports, and other activities that require students to leave school premises following a violent attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

The decision follows last week’s coordinated assault on several schools in Ogbomoso area, during which armed attackers killed a teacher and abducted students and staff, triggering widespread panic across affected communities.

One of the victims, Adesiyan Adegboye, a 49-year-old teacher, was laid to rest on Friday after lying in state at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso. Family members, colleagues, and residents attended the burial rites held later the same day.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven students were abducted from a secondary school, while additional pupils and teachers were also taken during the attacks. One person was also killed in the incident.

The violence affected several schools, including Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele. The incident has left many parents in distress, with several withdrawing their children from school amid fears of further attacks.

Tension also spread following rumours of a possible security breach at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, but the institution later dismissed the claims as false.

In response, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issued a statewide directive suspending all off-campus school activities until further notice. The ministry said the move was necessary to protect students and staff while security operations continue in the affected areas.

Schools have been instructed to keep students within their premises during school hours and immediately report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

Officials said the suspension will remain in place until the security situation improves and it is considered safe to resume normal academic and extracurricular activities.
