Five Italian nationals have died after a scuba diving expedition in the Maldives ended in tragedy during an exploration of an underwater cave system in Vaavu Atoll.
Authorities in the island nation confirmed that the group, which included academics and experienced divers, disappeared while attempting a deep-water dive at around 50 metres below the surface. Rescue teams later discovered one body inside a submerged cave, while four others are believed to have remained trapped in the underwater site.
The Maldivian military said recovery efforts were immediately launched, but difficult underwater conditions have made the operation extremely dangerous. Specialist deep-sea rescue divers have since been deployed to assist in retrieving the remaining victims.
Officials identified the deceased as members of a research and diving team that included ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, research fellow Muriel Oddenino, marine biology graduate Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. The group was reportedly connected to the University of Genoa in Italy.
Local reports indicate the divers entered the water on Thursday morning but failed to return to their vessel, prompting an emergency alert. Weather conditions in the area, located roughly 100 kilometres south of Malé, had been unstable, with warnings issued for maritime activity at the time.
The Maldives, a popular global destination for diving tourism, has recorded what is believed to be one of its most severe diving-related accidents.
Authorities are continuing recovery operations as investigations begin into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
