Taiwan has reaffirmed its position as an independent and self-governing state, responding strongly to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump warning against any move toward formal independence.
In a statement released on Saturday, Taiwan’s foreign ministry insisted that the island operates as a fully sovereign democratic nation. It emphasized that its political system, leadership, and governance are separate from that of the People’s Republic of China, rejecting any claim that it is subordinate to Beijing.
The response came shortly after Trump cautioned that steps toward formal independence could heighten tensions in the region. Taiwan, however, pointed out that its international position has remained consistent, noting that major partners, including the United States, have continued to maintain a long-standing policy framework regarding the island.
Beijing continues to assert sovereignty over Taiwan, but Taipei has repeatedly maintained that its future can only be determined by its people. The latest exchange adds to ongoing diplomatic sensitivity across the Taiwan Strait, where political messaging from all sides is closely watched.
