A Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, has advised Nigerians to adjust their spending habits and live within their income as the country continues to face rising economic pressure.
Fasua made the statement during a closed-door discussion in Abuja organised by a hiking club, where participants spoke about the increasing cost of living and financial hardship.
During the session, one attendee raised concerns about the high price of food and basic goods, saying many Nigerians can no longer afford everyday necessities due to inflation and insecurity.
Responding, Fasua acknowledged that prices have gone up but insisted that individuals must be more careful with how they spend.
He said households should focus on managing their resources wisely and avoid unnecessary expenses, adding that some level of financial discipline could help families cope with current challenges.
Fasua also noted that comparisons with developed countries like the United States are not always realistic because income value differs based on local economic conditions.
While he admitted that the economy is difficult, he maintained that government alone cannot solve all financial problems and that citizens also need to adjust their lifestyles.
However, some participants disagreed with his views, arguing that the situation reflects deeper economic issues beyond personal spending habits, including low wages and rising insecurity.
Fasua responded that although structural challenges exist, Nigerians still have room to improve how they manage their personal finances in the current environment.
