The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reacted to a viral claim about a new N5,000 banknote.

The image, widely shared online, allegedly shows a redesigned note carrying the face of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This development stirred strong reactions across social media, with many Nigerians questioning if the country was set for a new high-value currency.

The photo quickly gained attention on platforms like X, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Some users presented it as an official release. Others raised doubts and demanded clarification from the apex bank.

In response, the CBN moved to clear the air. The bank dismissed the claim and described the viral content as false. In a statement shared on its official X handle, the apex bank stated, “This content is fake. Let the public be guided.”

The CBN did not provide further details but maintained that no such denomination has been introduced. The clarification is expected to calm public speculation and prevent the spread of misinformation.

The bank urged the public to rely only on verified information from its official channels. It also warned against spreading unconfirmed reports that could mislead others.

Recall that in 2025, the CBN also dismissed similar claims suggesting the introduction of N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes. At the time, the bank described the report as false and advised Nigerians to ignore it.
