The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election held in the Federal Capital Territory.
INEC’s AMAC Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, announced that Maikalangu, who is seeking a second term, secured the highest number of votes with 40,295. He defeated candidates from several other parties in an election that recorded 62,861 valid votes out of a total of 65,197 ballots cast.
According to the official results, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) placed third after polling 3,398 votes. Rejected ballots stood at 2,336.
INEC also disclosed that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, with 65,676 accredited voters taking part in the election.
Prof. Abue said Maikalangu met all constitutional and electoral requirements and was therefore returned elected as AMAC chairman.
A breakdown of the results showed that candidates from multiple political parties participated in the contest, including APGA, NNPP, SDP, YPP, ZLP and others, with votes spread across the parties but clearly led by the APC candidate.
Reacting to the outcome, APC Collation Agent, Gambo Babale, praised INEC for what he described as a transparent and credible process, noting that the conduct of the election across polling units, wards and the area council collation centre boosted confidence in the results.
He added that the outcome reflected voter trust in the APC and urged the re-elected chairman to intensify efforts in delivering development to residents of AMAC.
Similarly, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) Ward Collation Agent, Abdullahi Ibrahim, commended the transparency of the collation exercise and congratulated the winner.
Party agents from the ADC, APC, APGA, YPP and NNPP signed the final result sheets at the collation centre, formally validating the outcome of the election.
