Seventeen residents have been sanctioned by a magistrate court in Lagos for violating the state’s environmental sanitation laws through open urination and defecation.
The disclosure was made by the Lagos State Government via its verified social media account, where it confirmed that the offenders were arrested during a routine enforcement exercise by the Lagos Waste Management Authority.
According to the government, the individuals were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi. After hearing the cases, the court found them guilty and ordered each offender to pay a fine of ₦40,000, with an alternative sentence of one month in prison.
In a statement released after the convictions, the state authorities described open defecation and urination as acts that undermine public hygiene and damage the image of Lagos as a modern city.
The government stressed that such behaviour poses risks to public health and degrades shared spaces.
The Lagos State Government reiterated that enforcement of sanitation regulations would continue across the metropolis, warning that violators should expect legal consequences.
Residents were also urged to play their part in keeping the city clean, with officials emphasising that environmental responsibility is a collective duty necessary for a healthier and more liveable Lagos.
