Vice President Kashim Shettima has paid a visit to Kwara State following a violent attack on Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area that claimed at least 75 lives.
The vice president arrived in the state on Saturday on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a mandate to assess the situation on the ground and express the Federal Government’s sympathy to affected families. He was received by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq alongside senior government officials.
According to the vice president’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, President Tinubu instructed Shettima to engage local authorities and community leaders while reassuring residents of the government’s commitment to justice and security.
The attack, which occurred late Tuesday night, reportedly followed the community’s refusal to accept forced indoctrination by armed extremists. While early reports placed the death toll above 100, state authorities later confirmed that at least 75 residents were killed.
Governor AbdulRazaq had earlier described the incident as a brutal assault on peaceful villagers, noting that the victims were targeted for resisting extremist ideology being imposed on them.
During the visit, Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s assurance that those responsible would be pursued and prosecuted. The President had earlier condemned the killings, describing them as inhumane, and confirmed that security forces had begun operations in the area.
Tinubu also announced the deployment of an Army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield to restore calm, protect vulnerable communities, and prevent further attacks. He stressed the need for stronger cooperation between federal and state authorities to support victims and bring lasting security to the region.
The Federal Government has pledged continued engagement with Kwara State to provide relief for affected families and ensure accountability for the violence.
