The death toll from the violent clash involving Amotekun operatives in Akinlalu, Osun State, has risen to four, following the death of another injured victim on Saturday.
Residents alleged that Amotekun officers stormed the town last Tuesday, firing shots indiscriminately and attacking residents with machetes. Three people reportedly died on the spot, while eight sustained serious injuries. One of the victims receiving treatment at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, later succumbed to his wounds.
A community representative, Babarinde Olamide, said the security operatives arrived in three vehicles after accusing a resident of seizing a locally made weapon belonging to one of their officers. He added that the team’s actions caused widespread panic as they opened fire and inflicted injuries on fleeing residents.
Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an immediate probe into the killings and dispatched a government delegation to the affected community.
“I’m committed to justice and the rule of law,” the governor said in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed. “All those responsible will be held accountable once investigations are completed. I urge residents to remain calm as the government works to uncover the truth.”
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state condemned what it described as “extra-judicial killings” by the Amotekun Corps. The party called on Governor Adeleke to ensure transparency in the investigation and guarantee justice for the victims.
Security sources say the Osun State Security Council is expected to meet over the incident and rising concerns about possible spillover from recent bandit attacks in neighbouring Kwara State.
