Temi Otedola, actress and daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola, has made headlines after officially changing her surname to “Ajibade” on Instagram, following her marriage to Nigerian singer Mr Eazi, whose real name is Oluwatosin Ajibade.
The couple tied the knot in 2025 through a series of lavish celebrations across Monaco, Dubai, and Iceland, blending Nigerian traditions with international flair. From a Yoruba wedding at her family’s Dubai residence to a private church ceremony in Iceland, their union highlighted heritage, family, and love. Temi’s public adoption of her husband’s name, however, has reignited debate in Nigeria about whether women should take their husband’s surname or retain their maiden names.
The conversation is not new. In August, feminist commentator Rachelle (@omo_kosoko) encouraged women to keep their surnames after marriage if they wished, sharing her experience of four years of marriage, relocation, and motherhood without changing her name. Her post drew both support and skepticism, with some questioning whether women marrying into wealthy families would make the same choice.
At the wedding, Femi Otedola offered his daughter advice, praising her husband as “a very great and blessed man” and suggesting she submit to him, a statement that sparked further discussion on social media about tradition and gender roles.
