The Lagos State Government has rolled out a fresh initiative aimed at reducing flooding on Lagos Island by opening up natural water channels along major road networks.
According to officials, the plan forms part of the state’s urban regeneration drive, which combines infrastructure upgrades with the provision of modern facilities for residents.
The project was unveiled during the groundbreaking of a shopping complex set to replace the demolished Pelewura iron rod market at Adeniji Adele. The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, working alongside the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area, is overseeing the construction, which is expected to be completed within 12 months.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, highlighted that though Lagos Island is not technically below sea level, its proximity to the ocean makes proper drainage a constant challenge. He stressed that the new channels will involve removing structures that block natural water flow, restoring what he described as the “free-flowing drains of old.”
“We want to return to the days when rainwater could move freely across the Island, without obstruction. That is the future we are working toward,” he said.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Olajide Abiodun, described the accompanying shopping mall as a sign of renewal for the area, while Chairman of Lagos Island LCDA, Folawiyo Alade, assured residents that the project would be delivered on schedule.
The government says the effort is designed not only to reduce recurrent flooding but also to modernize Lagos Island and improve the quality of life for its people.
