The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt condolences to Zambia over the passing of its former President, Edgar Lungu, who died on Thursday at the age of 68.

In a statement released on Saturday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Amb. Yusuf Tuggar expressed Nigeria’s sympathy to the Zambian people and government.

“President Lungu served Zambia with dedication from 2015 to 2021, steering the nation through significant milestones, including infrastructure development and regional diplomacy,” the statement said. It added that Lungu’s leadership championed national unity under the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation,’ promoted inclusivity, and supported economic diversification.

“Nigeria also acknowledges President Lungu’s contributions to strengthening Africa’s collective voice on the global stage and his commitment to regional solidarity,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasized.

“We stand in solidarity with the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front, and all Zambians during this period of national mourning,” the statement concluded. “May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

Nigeria joins the international community in celebrating the life and legacy of Edgar Lungu, a leader who left a lasting impact on Zambia and Africa as a whole.
