Timothy Omotoso, the Nigerian televangelist, was rearrested in South Africa early Saturday morning in East London, weeks after being acquitted of multiple rape and human trafficking charges.
The 66-year-old pastor, who leads the Jesus Dominion International church in South Africa, had faced 32 charges, including rape, sexual exploitation, and trafficking, some of which involved young women from his congregation.
Omotoso was originally arrested in 2017 and spent nine years in jail awaiting trial. However, he was acquitted last month on all charges, but his legal battles are far from over.
According to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, the rearrest is linked to immigration matters. “Well, I know it’s Omotoso. He was arrested this morning around 5 o’clock in East London as he was finishing the church,” Masemola confirmed.
Omotoso will appear in court on Monday, where more details regarding the immigration-related charges will be revealed. “The arrest is based on immigration matters,” Masemola added.
This development adds another chapter to the ongoing saga surrounding Omotoso, who has been a controversial figure in South Africa for years.
