Lagos State has officially set the date for its local government elections, with voters heading to the polls on July 12, 2025.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) announced the election, which will determine the leaders of 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Mr. Tope Ojo, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, confirmed the date on Friday, stating that the elections will cover 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillor seats. Should a re-run be required, it will take place on July 19.
“To ensure there is no leadership vacuum in the councils, the election date was carefully selected,” Ojo explained.
He also revealed that the electoral process has already begun, with the release of the Notice of Election. Political parties are now required to obtain nomination forms from LASIEC’s headquarters.
Campaigns for the election are scheduled to commence on April 18, with the official end date for campaigns set for July 9.
LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), reassured the public that the commission is committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible election. “We will ensure a level playing field for all political parties,” she said, urging candidates to adhere to the electoral timetable.
The commission will publish the Election Guidelines on April 17, with political parties required to submit nomination forms for “substituted” and “only candidate” positions by June 25.
