Abiola Odutayo, the driver involved in the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of the tech startup Bumpa, has been charged with reckless and careless driving.
The Lagos State Police presented the charge before Magistrate M.E. Owumi of the Tinubu Magistrate Court, alleging that Odutayo violated the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2018.
According to the charge sheet, Odutayo drove a Ford Edge Jeep “recklessly and inconsiderately” on March 4, 2025, at around 10:20 PM at the 1004 Housing Estate junction, Victoria Island, Lagos.
This reckless driving led to the death of 32-year-old Adetunji Opayele, the prosecutor stated.
The charge sheet reads, “That you, Abiola Odutayo ‘F,’ on March 4, 2025, drove a vehicle in a reckless and inconsiderate manner, showing no regard for other road users, thus committing an offence.”
It further accuses him of driving in such a way that caused Opayele’s death.
Following the charges, the court granted Odutayo bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties. The case has been adjourned to April 16, 2025.
The fatal accident has stirred outrage across Nigeria, with over 63,000 Nigerians signing a petition on Change.org demanding justice for Opayele.
CCTV footage from the night of the incident shows Opayele’s power bike colliding with Odutayo’s vehicle after it entered the junction, leading to the fatal crash.
The tragic death has sparked widespread calls for accountability in the accident that claimed the life of the promising young entrepreneur.
