The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly to urgently intervene in the escalating altercation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The students’ body warns that the dispute could spiral into a national embarrassment if left unchecked.

In a statement signed by NANS National Vice President Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, the association urged for immediate intervention to prevent the matter from deteriorating further.

Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio’s clash began over a seating disagreement during Senate plenary, but it escalated when the Kogi Central senator accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.

“We appeal to both parties to sheathe their swords for the sake of peace,” Akinbodunse said.

“The National Assembly is a critical arm of government, and the leaders there should act as role models. We cannot afford to let such issues fester and bring disgrace to our country.”

Akinbodunse also emphasized that while Akpoti-Uduaghan has yet to substantiate her allegations, the accusation of sexual harassment must be properly investigated. “If this matter is not handled with care, it could cause international embarrassment for Nigeria,” she added.

The NANS leader urged both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan to prioritize peace and the nation’s well-being.

“The Senate President should offer an olive branch, and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan should also work towards resolving the conflict. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will not hesitate to act if the matter is not resolved,” Akinbodunse warned.

This call for resolution follows multiple related developments, including Akpabio’s wife suing Akpoti-Uduaghan for defamation.
