The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured a resounding victory, sweeping all chairmanship and councillorship positions in the 30 local government areas (LGAs) of Osun State.
The announcement was made by Hashim Abioye, Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), during a press briefing on Saturday.
The elections took place despite a cautionary statement from the police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, advising the postponement of the poll due to security concerns. The commission moved forward, citing a ruling by the Osun State High Court in Ilesa, which ordered the elections to proceed.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, who cast his vote in Ede North LGA, described the process as “peaceful” and urged for a calm and orderly election. He stated, “The process has been very peaceful… there should be no violence because Osun State is a very peaceful state.”
Despite the warnings, the state electoral commission carried out its duties from an undisclosed location after the police sealed the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo and arrested some personnel.
The victory comes after months of political tension and clashes, including a violent confrontation between APC and PDP members earlier this week, which resulted in at least six deaths.
The AGF had earlier argued that the local council elections should not take place, citing a Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated the APC chairmen previously dismissed by a lower court.
However, the PDP’s triumph solidifies the party’s control over the local government landscape in the state.
In light of the ongoing tension, Governor Adeleke had previously called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, warning that APC members, supported by security agencies, were attempting to take control of the council secretariats.
