The local government election in Osun State on Saturday was marred by a notably low voter turnout.

Reports from various polling units, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), indicated a lack of participation, with many areas devoid of voters, State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) staff, and security personnel.

In Osogbo, the state capital, several polling units, including Ogo-Oluwa, Alekunwodo, Olaiya, and Oja-Oba, were completely empty by 9:15 am.

“There were no voters or election officials present at some of these polling units,” a NAN correspondent reported. Additionally, the voters’ list was not displayed in some places, further complicating the situation.

Despite a state order for a restriction of vehicular movement from 5 am to 5 pm, there was no compliance, and vehicles moved freely throughout the state. However, police roadblocks were visible on major roads.

In contrast, some areas, such as Ede, the home town of Governor Ademola Adeleke, showed more activity. Voters were seen at polling units like Obalaoye Grammar School and Oloba Atapara Ward. One local, Mr. Nifemi Akingbala, praised the peaceful nature of the process: “The election has been very peaceful, and I urge others to vote without fear.”

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, also cast his vote in the Odo-otin LGA and commended OSSIEC for the smooth conduct of the election, calling on the electorate to remain firm in upholding the law.

Despite efforts to encourage voter participation, the election concluded early in many units, underscoring the broader issue of disengagement in the political process.
