A deadly petrol tanker explosion in Dikko, Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State has left at least 60 people dead, with several others injured.

The blast occurred when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed, and an attempt was made to transfer the spilled fuel to another tanker.

During the transfer, the spilt fuel came into contact with a generator, triggering the devastating explosion.

Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) initially reported 50 deaths, but Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials confirmed 60 bodies recovered from the scene.

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State expressed his deep condolences and urged for immediate action to treat the injured, while also calling for stronger enforcement of road safety measures in the area.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, also condemned the incident, extending their condolences to the victims’ families and emphasizing the need for greater caution in hazardous situations like petrol spills.
