A major leap forward for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa is set to take place with the establishment of the first AI-dedicated university in Nigeria, located in Epe, Lagos.
The new institution, named Wini University, aims to transform Africa into a global leader in technological innovation while addressing pressing issues like unemployment by equipping Nigerian youth with advanced AI skills.
Inspired by the world’s first AI university in Qatar, which attracted top-tier scholars and innovators from across the globe, Wini University seeks to position Nigeria as a formidable player in the global AI market.
The journey towards its creation began in 2016 when a group of Nigerian and Boston-based visionaries joined forces with a shared dream of advancing AI on the continent.
After years of strategic planning, securing interest from the National University Commission (NUC), and garnering support, the vision for Wini University is finally becoming a reality.
According to Wini Group, the university will be a pioneering force in African education, with ambitions of serving as the nucleus for the continent’s first AI-powered Silicon Valley.
The vision for the university is to create a vibrant community of world-class faculty and students passionate about using AI and quantum computing to drive progress not only in Africa but globally.
The university aims to cultivate a generation of African youth who will be active players and innovators in the global AI landscape.
Wini University is envisioned as Africa’s first educational institution entirely dedicated to AI.
Beyond academics, it represents a bold step toward turning Lagos into the continent’s technological hub, where innovation and technology converge to tackle real-world challenges.
President Vladimir Putin of Russia, in 2013, declared that the nation leading in AI would dominate the world as the next superpower. This vision is unfolding as AI becomes central to the progress of industries and human advancement.
The creation of Wini University is seen as an opportunity to empower Nigerian youth to develop groundbreaking solutions that will redefine industries and economies.
Through an educational focus on blockchain, cloud computing, generative AI, OpenAI, data science, and machine learning, the university is poised to position its graduates as leaders in the rapidly expanding global AI market.
The global AI market is expected to reach $4.6 trillion by 2040, and Wini University aims to be at the forefront of this technological revolution.
By tapping into the opportunities provided by Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, the university will allow Africa to solidify its place on the global technological map.
Olukayode Akano, Chairman of Wini Group Nigeria, explained that the choice to locate the university in Epe was influenced by President Bola Tinubu’s goal of attracting global investors to Nigeria, as well as his administration’s vision of transforming the country into a trillion-dollar economy.
Akano also cited the efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to position Lagos as the “California of Africa,” which has helped elevate the region’s economy to the fifth largest in Africa, similar to California’s ranking on the global stage.
In addition to support from local leaders, Wini University has also garnered backing from traditional rulers in Epe, including HRM Oba Rafiu Balogun, Elejirin of Ejinrin, who have agreed to provide land for the university’s permanent site.
This collaboration with the Lubajo-Egbe and Soje Kingdoms has further solidified the university’s commitment to the region.
The establishment of Wini University is expected to significantly boost the local economy by transitioning Epe from an agrarian base to a thriving digital economy.
The project will create job opportunities for the youth in Epe, Okeosho, Soje, and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, the university will focus on nurturing technopreneurs who will play an instrumental role in transforming Lagos into the Silicon Valley of Africa.
Innovations in fields such as robotics, drones, humanoids, mobile apps, and climate change solutions will be developed and marketed locally and globally.
“The Proposed Wini University promises to transform Lagos into a thriving ecosystem of technological advancement, attracting global partnerships, investments, and talent. It focuses on practical AI-driven solutions to prepare its students for the future,” Akano added.
