Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has been awarded Nigeria’s highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), by President Bola Tinubu during a bilateral meeting at Aso Rock on Sunday.
In his remarks, Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s deep appreciation for its strong partnership with India. “The honour is to signify our appreciation of India as Nigeria’s partner,” the president said.
He emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties for mutual benefit, noting that India and Nigeria share a long-standing relationship.
Tinubu also praised Modi’s political achievements, stating, “You represent a very strong commitment in democratic values and norms, you have been doing a good job historically, winning three consecutive elections in a complex society.
That is a feat that we respect so much.”As part of the ceremonial proceedings, Prime Minister Modi was received at the forecourt of the presidential villa on Saturday evening, where he was welcomed with the Indian national anthem.
This was followed by a guard of honour by the brigade of guards, with the Nigerian anthem played.
Afterward, Modi inspected the parade and was escorted into Tinubu’s office for closed-door talks.
The two leaders are expected to discuss and finalize several bilateral agreements during the course of the visit, including signing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at enhancing collaboration in key sectors.
