The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting he is preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election, reaffirming instead his loyalty to President Bola Tinubu.
A statement released on Saturday by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the speculation as “a fabrication by idle individuals” aimed at tarnishing the minister’s reputation.
According to the statement, Wike remains firmly behind President Tinubu and has no hidden political agenda. “The Minister has made it clear that his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will continue through 2031,” Olayinka said.
He added that the rumours of a supposed meeting where Wike’s candidacy was allegedly discussed were false. The only meeting that took place on August 20, 2025, he noted, was a gathering of southern PDP stakeholders, whose outcome was publicly documented in a statement released by party leaders from the South-East and South-South zones.
The aide further criticised those behind the reports, accusing them of attempting to create divisions within the PDP and discredit Wike’s character. “Wike is known for being open about his decisions. He doesn’t operate in secrecy, and his political position is clear for everyone to see,” Olayinka said.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has been a key political figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration since his appointment as FCT Minister. His open endorsement of President Tinubu’s re-election bid further cements his alignment with the current government’s political and developmental agenda.
