Stray Cows Will Be Slaughtered, Fed to Prisoners — Ghana Mayor Warns

- 20 April 2025

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Boadi, has declared a crackdown on stray cattle in the city, announcing that beginning May 1, any roaming cow will be seized, slaughtered, and served as food to inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi on Friday, Boadi said the new policy is a response to the growing nuisance of cattle roaming freely, disrupting traffic and defacing the city’s image.

“If you have cattle and if they stray in the vicinity of KMA, be assured that from May 1, they will be killed and given to Kumasi Central Prison for food,” Boadi stated emphatically. “Especially the route from the airport through to Manhyia Palace.”

He emphasized the need to maintain a dignified appearance for Kumasi, especially for visitors, noting, “I cannot sit for visitors to come to Kumasi from the airport to Manhyia and all they see are faecal matter from cattle.”

Boadi urged all herders to take immediate action to prevent their animals from entering the city, warning of severe consequences for non-compliance.

The mayor’s warning has sparked reactions across Ghana, highlighting the tension between urban order and traditional herding practices.
