Foreign Minister Lands in Istanbul for Urgent Arab League Talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Istanbul on Saturday for a high-stakes meeting with Arab League diplomats, as tensions between Tehran and Israel continue to escalate.

According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, Araghchi is attending the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers’ meeting to rally regional support and address what Iran calls “Zionist aggression.”

“The Foreign Minister arrived in Istanbul this morning to participate in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ meeting,” Tasnim reported.

The emergency meeting, set to include around 40 diplomats, comes in the wake of ongoing missile exchanges between Iran and Israel. The crisis intensified after Israel launched a preemptive strike on June 13, claiming Iran was on the brink of developing nuclear weapons. Tehran swiftly retaliated, triggering the most dangerous confrontation between the longtime adversaries in recent history.

“At this meeting, at the suggestion of Iran, the issue of the Zionist regime’s attack on our country will be specifically addressed,” Araghchi said, according to Tasnim.

Before arriving in Turkey, the Iranian diplomat held talks in Geneva with counterparts from Britain, France, and Germany, signaling some openness to diplomacy. However, Araghchi made it clear that any peace efforts hinge on Israel ceasing its attacks.

“Tehran is ready to consider diplomacy again only if Israel’s aggression is stopped,” he said.

Turkish state news agency Anadolu reports that the Arab League ministers are expected to issue a joint statement following the talks.
